On Monday of this week, it was reported that a former police officer from
the Boulder Police Department was scheduled to enter a guilty plea on
DUI. The hearing in which the ex-officer was planning to enter her plea was
rescheduled until May, since she has decided to first hire a criminal
defense attorney to help her to effectively handle the case. As surprising
as it may be to learn that this former police officer was arrested on
charges of drinking and driving, what is even more shocking is the fact
that during her time serving with the Boulder police, she was actually
the Department's DUI officer.
Other Side of the Law
In other words, she was allegedly caught committing the very same crime
which she herself was formerly charged with detecting. Her arrest occurred
on I-25 at the beginning of December of last year, after she was observed
weaving on the highway. When Thornton police spoke with her in her vehicle,
she is reported to have voluntarily admitted to being drunk.
The postponement of the former officer's guilty plea for the purpose
of hiring legal representation is a highly advisable course of action.
Many people who are arrested and charged with DUI make the mistake of
entering a guilty plea without first consulting with an attorney, since
they think that it is their only chance of avoiding jail time. This does
not, however, protect them against the serious
long-term ramifications of a DUI arrest, including a license suspension, fines, mandatory alcohol
treatment and possible use of an ignition interlock device, in addition
to living into the future with a criminal conviction.
It would have been better for her to have exercised her 5th Amendment right to remain silent from the outset of the case, rather than
admitting to being drunk behind the wheel, but even at this late stage
in the case she may be able to obtain a better outcome by hiring a defense
attorney. If you have been charged with DUI, do not wait to
contact an experienced Colorado Springs criminal defense lawyer at the Samuelson
Law Firm to discuss the circumstances of the arrest and to begin working
on a strategy for your case!
